EMDR is a proven treatment for trauma and has been found to help with the following problems: abuse, anxiety, depression, anger, behavioural and substance addictions, attachment disorders (relationship difficulties), complicated grief, eating disorders and low self-esteem, phobias, performance enhancement and self-harming.
However, if the experience is traumatic the brain’s information processing system stores the memory in a ‘frozen’ form resulting in PTSD. Traumatic memories fail to integrate into the individual’s life experience and self-concept. This distressing material gets trapped and prevents healing from taking place keeping you feeling afraid, stuck and engaging in dysfunctional behaviours.
With the use of bilateral eye movements, auditory or electronic tappers EMDR therapy activates the brain’s natural information-processing system enabling the memory to be processed properly. People notice a decline in negative emotions and imagery vividness.

I also provide Attachment-Informed EMDR (AI-EMDR). AI-EMDR heals relational trauma. Relational trauma may occur as a result of having failed to receive adequate care as a child. This may be in the form of neglect, physical, sexual and/or emotional/psychological abuse committed by a primary caregiver. AI-EMDR helps the client heal attachment wounds through resource tapping and a client-centred approach. The emphasis is on the importance of the therapeutic relationship in creating a sense of trust, empathy and safety.
EMDR therapy involves attention to three time periods: the past, present, and future. Focus is initially given to past disturbing memories and this is processed using bilateral stimulation. When the memory has been integrated, we focus on the related pain trapped in the body. When the past has been healed we explore and clear up present triggers and then develop the skills and attitudes needed for positive future actions.
In EMDR therapy these items are addressed using an eight-phased treatment approach.
